SWINE-WASTE-TO-BIODIESEL.

Smithfield Foods, a well-recognized brand in U.S. supermarkets for fresh pork and processed meats, will invest $20 million in a project to convert swine waste to biodiesel fuel. Smithfield will become the major partner in BEST Biofuel that will build a new facility near Smithfield’s Circle Four Farms swine production plant near Milford, Utah.

At the new facility, hog waste will be concentrated in liquid form and then converted to biogas. That biogas, in turn, will be converted to biomethanol. The biomethanol will then be shipped to another facility where soybean oil, animal fat or used cooking oil will be added to make biodiesel fuel.

The project is expected to begin construction in April. Visit Smithfield at http://www.smithfieldfoods.com/ (click News).
