WORLD WIND WATCH.

While 2002 was a lackluster year in the U.S. for new wind power, Europe saw a growth of 33 percent with 5871 megawatts of new capacity, according to the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA). The total capacity in the 15 nations included in EWEA record keeping is now about 23,000 megawatts. Germany, which in area is slightly smaller than the U.S. state of Montana, now has over 12,000 megawatts of wind generating capacity. All of the U.S. has 4681 megawatts installed. Europeans spent 5.6 billion euros ($ 6.26 billion) last year on new wind installations. Visit the EWEA at http://www.ewea.org/ .

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) will add wind energy for the first time to its power mix with the construction of a 120-megawatt wind farm in the Mojave Desert. The Pine Tree Wind Project, to be built by Wind Turbine Prometheus, a partnership of Zilkha Renewable Energy and Prometheus Energy Services, will have 80 1.5 megawatt GE Wind Energy turbines. Construction should begin later next year or early next when all permits and wind assessments are complete. Visit LADWP at http://www.greenla.com/ .
