AN INDUSTRY OF OCEAN ENERGY.
The UK Energy Ministry has awarded GBP 3.7 million ($5.96 million) for the further development of two distinctly different ocean energy technologies. Wavegen, which is building on its experience from its Isle of Islay wave power generation facility, will use GBP 2.1 million ($3.38 million) to build a prototype of a next-generation installation. And Tidal Hydraulic Generators, which recently successfully tested a tidal stream generator off the coast of Wales, will receive GBP 1.6 million ($2.58 million) to develop another prototype.
According to news reports, Energy Minister Brian Wilson is looking for success in the prototypes, and in the ocean energy sector in general, to help build an ocean energy technology industry for the U.K. That industry would build products that could be sold around the world.
