KEEPING TAB ON GREEN VEHICLES.
R.L. Polk and Company, which has been statistically analyzing the automotive industry since 1922, has offered these numbers regarding electric and hybrid electric vehicles based on new vehicle registrations during the first 10 months of 2002 - January through October.
-- There were nearly 35,000 registrations of the seven electric and hybrid electric vehicle models included as green vehicles in the study. (There were only 650 registrations in all of 1997.)
-- Of the green vehicle registrations 83 percent were hybrid electric vehicles.
-- Of the green vehicle registrations 78 percent were either Toyota Prius or Honda Civic Hybrids. (Prius: 17,500 registrations, Honda Civic Hybrid: nearly 10,000 registrations)
--Nearly 30 percent of vehicles were sold in California Designated Marketing Areas (DMAs). Three of the top five green vehicle markets are in California - Los Angeles, San Francisco and Sacramento.
-- In the Los Angeles DMA there were 5141 registrations, San Francisco 3461, Washington, DC 1976, Sacramento 1459, and New York, NY 1338.
