THE ROAD TO HYDROGEN.
The U.S. Department of Energy has unveiled its National Hydrogen Energy Roadmap - a guide in the effort to integrate hydrogen into America’s energy mix. The Roadmap, in its charter, is meant to inspire as much as lay out a pathway to a hydrogen economy. Details of destinations along the Roadmap will be filled in later with help from industry.
Yet from a company already involved in hydrogen, Royal/Dutch Shell Chairman Phil Watts, in an interview with Reuters, felt that it was too early to say how quickly hydrogen might make a dent in fossil fuel’s current dominance. A complete, new, infrastructure would need to be built to support it. The Chairman thought that hydrogen might show a 25 percent penetration into the primary energy mix by 2050 - but that’s the best case scenario. He also thought natural gas would become more common as a bridge to a hydrogen future. The company currently operates an active hydrogen division - Shell Hydrogen.
