WORLD WIND WATCH.

The largest planned offshore wind project for the U.S. - Cape Wind off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts - has now been eclipsed by a factor of two by a project under review for the waters off the coast of Virginia.

Winergy LLC of New York is proposing a 975 megawatt, 271 turbine project on 57 square miles of open Atlantic Ocean. The project will incorporate state-of-the-art GE Wind Energy 3.6 megawatt turbines, developed specifically for offshore use.

At $900 million, the project would be built on one of four sites Winergy has been studying for a year or so. The primary site is Porpoise Banks 2 five miles from Metomkin Island, a barrier island in Accomack County. The permitting process could take up to three years beginning with an analysis by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. In a preliminary review the Corps has already concluded that no environmental-impact study will be required and that no endangered species or historical places will be affected. Corps has opened a period of public comment that will end on November 19.

All four possible sites being analyzed by the Corps can be reviewed and commented on at the Corp website at http://www.nao.usace.army.mil/Regulatory/PN/PN.html. Visit Winergy, and their many possible offshore wind projects at http://www.winergyllc.com/
