WORLD WIND WATCH.
Wind energy can replace nuclear energy in the U.K., according to the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA). By 2010 scheduled closures of nuclear power plants means a loss of 7 percent of the nation’s power supply. BWEA calculations published in a submission to the U.K.’s Energy Review show that on and offshore wind energy can supply 8 percent of the nation’s power needs by that time.
BWEA and others have shown previously that wind resources alone can supply the U.K. with more power than it consumes. Given that estimate, the BWEA would also like to see the nation’s Renewables Obligation increased from 10 percent by 2020 to 20 percent by that date. Visit the BWEA at http://www.bwea.com/ .
