THE STANDARD.
California Governor Gray Davis has signed legislation what will become known as the California Renewable Portfolio Standard. Now by law 20 percent of retail sales of electricity in California must come from renewables - wind, solar, biomass, geothermal - by 2017. Suppliers must increase the sale of renewables by 1 percent, or more, each year to meet the Standard. The Renewable Portfolio Standard will be the strongest in the nation to date.
According to news reports, two of the utilities affected, Pacific Gas and Electric and Southern California Edison think that 20 percent of the electricity they sell can be green as early as 2010, since they already get 10 -12 percent from renewables.
Municipal utilities aren’t affected by the law, but some, such as the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), have a strong renewable program anyway. Visit the State of California website at http://www.ca.gov/ (click Governor’s page, Press Room, Press Releases)
