FROM THE SUMMIT.
This editor could not afford the airline fare to South Africa, but news reports indicate that the U.S. is not showing much compassion for the world’s poor or the global environment both rich and poor share. (Look for a review of the Johannesburg Earth Summit in the next issue.)
Though the U.S. stance may be an embarrassment for those of us living within the country’s borders, readers should take heart. More good work seems to get done to help the environment outside of Washington than inside.
Premiers of five Canadian provinces and governors of the six New England states met for two days this week to discuss, among many things, global warming and greenhouse gas emissions. The outcome was a resolution to evaluate and recommend options for reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the region. Premier Bernard Lord of New Brunswick said that working together to reduce emissions could set an example for other regions to follow. The Conference of New England Governors and Eastern Canadian Premiers has been held annually for 27 years.
