SOLAR GREEN BUILDING.
The Woods Hole Research Center (WHRC) will install a 26.4 kilowatt solar photovoltaic system for its Falmouth, Massachusetts’ Ordway Campus. The new sustainable research facility will generate enough electricity for all its own needs including enough energy for heating and cooling equipment. The facility will incorporate a ground source heat pump with the solar electricity used to power that system. The Campus will remain attached to the grid in lieu of a battery back-up system. Excess power will be sold back to that grid.
The solar system will be installed by Northern Power Systems. The Ordway Campus project was funded, in part, through a $226,000 grant from the Massachusetts Technology Cooperative (MTC) Green Buildings Program. MTC manages the $150 million Renewable Energy Trust which has allocated $14.6 million to the Green Buildings Program. The Ordway campus was designed by green buildings specialists McDonough + Partners.
