WORLD WIND WATCH.

According to the Patriot Ledger, of Quincy, Massachusetts, GE WindEnergy was one of a number of wind turbine manufacturers touring the city’s closed Fore River Shipyard as a possible location for manufacturing wind turbines. Facilities at the shipyard, which opened in the 1800’s, would serve U.S. East Coast wind projects now under consideration.

Turbines, including blades and towers, could be shipped by barge from Fore River to prospective wind power sites such as Horseshoe Shoal six miles off the coast of Hyannis, Massachusetts. Cape Wind, the 420 megawatt offshore wind farm now in the planning and approval stages at that site between Nantucket Island and Cape Cod, would have 170 turbines, a substantial order for any turbine manufacturer.

Inching forward on the Cape Wind Project, which hopes to be completed by 2005, the U.S Army Corps of Engineers has issued a Scope of Work for the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project as a way to solicit input and comments regarding the creation of the EIS.

Canada would like to bring emission-free wind power to remote locations in the country to replace diesel generators as well as enter the wind turbine industry. To accomplish both, the Government of Canada will invest more than $1 million (CDN) in the testing, development and commercialization of two small turbines, 10 and 60 kilowatts. The turbines, based on the Vergnet S.A. design from France, will be reengineered to withstand Canada’s extreme temperature range (-40 to +40 Celsius) and high winds. The Government hopes to offer the turbines to the world market at prices for 15 -20 percent less than existing models.

The turbines will be tested at the Atlantic Wind Test Site at http://www.awts.pe.ca/ Visit Natural Resources Canada at http://www.nrcan.gc.ca/ , Vergnet at http://www.vergnet.fr/ .
