WORLD WIND WATCH.
It’s official. A new wind turbine company has been formed - GE Wind Energy. Created from the purchase of selected assets from Enron Wind - power plant design, manufacturing, engineering and site selection, operation and maintenance services, GE Wind Energy will take up where Enron Wind left off in the wind turbine industry. (The wind farms owned by Enron Wind will remain under that company’s management for the time being.)
Included in the deal are two new products under development, 3.2 and 3.6 megawatt turbines. The 3.6 megawatt machine is now undergoing testing off the coast of Spain. Visit GE Wind Energy, a business division of GE Power Systems, at http://www.gewindenergy.com/ .
Through a contract with Alliant Energy Interstate Power and Light, the U.S. Midwestern state of Iowa will have a new wind farm. To be built by Clipper Windpower, the farm to be constructed outside of Spirit Lake will have 29 turbines and supply 150,000 megawatt hours of electricity each year to Alliant customers beginning in 2003 when the facility is on line.
Alliant, too, as part of its $1 billion Power Iowa program, will decide in the next few weeks whether or not to purchase another 150,000 megawatt hours of wind energy for resale to its customers. That decision would require yet another wind farm to be built in the state. Visit Alliant Energy at http://www.alliantenergy.com/ .
Two Vestas Wind Systems divisions are reporting new sales. Vestas American Wind Technology, which is building a U.S. turbine production plant in Oregon, has received an order for 62 V47- 660 kilowatt turbines from Cannon Power International for the Cabazon Wind Project in California.
Vestas Celtic Wind Technology has received an order for 71 V52 850 kilowatt turbines from Powergen Renewables for the Derrybrian Wind Farm in County Galway, Ireland.
