WORLD WIND WATCH.
The UK’s largest offshore wind farm has been given the go-ahead by the government. To be built at Middle Scroby Sands, 1.5 miles (2.5 kilometers) off the coast of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk on the UK’s east coast, the 76-megawatt facility with 38 2 megawatt turbines will generate enough power for the equivalent of 52,000 average British homes. Powergen Renewables Offshore Wind will begin construction later this year with completion by the summer of 2003.
This wind farm is the first offshore wind farm to be approved of 18 plans submitted to the Crown Estate last year. The Estate, which grants leases to wind farms built on the seabed off the coast of the UK, is also investigating the possibility of leasing more sites further offshore than the first 18. German firm P&T plans to have the first of 114 turbines installed at sites in Poznan, Olsztyn and Kolobrzeg, Poland by the end of this year. Further plans announced by the company are to install 1000 turbines, for a total of 1.5 gigawatts in Poland by 2012. The company is looking at site on former military bases.
