WORLD WIND WATCH.

Bullish on wind energy, FPL Energy has signed a purchase agreement with American Wind Technology - the U.S. subsidiary of Vestas Wind Systems - for 175 Vestas V47 -660 kilowatt turbines. FPL also signed an option for an additional 650 turbines.

FPL, too, has cut the ribbon on its 263-megawatt Stateline Energy Center, the largest single wind project to date in the American West. Stateline, which took only nine months to build, straddles the border of Washington and Oregon and can generate enough power for 60,000 average U.S. homes. FPL, as the owner, developer and operator, will sell power from Stateline to PacificCorp Power Marketing (PPM), for resale to customers in the Pacific Northwest.

FPL Energy, including projects now underway, plans to add 1000 to 2000 megawatts of new wind power to their portfolio by the end of 2003. For projects that become operational by that time FPL will receive a production tax credit (PTC) of 1.7 cents per kilowatt hour of wind-generated electricity for ten years. The company already has 1400 megawatts of wind capacity at 14 wind farms in eight states. Visit FPL Energy at http://www.fplenergy.com/ .

With the large, secure order from FPL in hand, Vestas will go ahead with final negotiations towards building a 70,000 square meter manufacturing facility in Portland, Oregon. The plant will assemble nacelles, produce blades and manufacture turbine towers.Visit Vestas at http://www.vestas.com/ .

Texas consumers in the area covered by Central Power & Light (CP&L) can now have 100 percent of their power generated by the wind. Through an energy option offered from Green Mountain Energy, CP&L customers must pay surcharge of $ 4.95 per month and a rate of 8.8 cents per kilowatt hour for the pollution and greenhouse gas free electricity.
