WORLD WIND WATCH.

Plans have been approved in Ireland to go ahead with a 520 megawatt windfarm to be built in the Irish Sea. The 640 million euro ($571.4 million) project will be built more than four miles off the coast of County Wicklow on what is known as the Arklow Sandbank. When complete, more than 200 turbines sunk into the sea bed will supply the Celtic Tiger - population 3.7 million - with 10 percent of the booming economy’s power needs. The offshore windfarm will reduce the country’s carbon dioxide emissions by 13.5 million tons per year.

The project will be built by Eirtricity, a joint effort of National Toll Roads and the Future Wind Partnership. The first 60 megawatt phase of the project should be operating by the fall of this year. Visit Eirtricity at http://www.eirtricity.ie/ .
