ENERGIES... week of May 17, 1998
KEEP AN EYE ON THIS. In the race to develop a far more efficient replacement for the conventional internal combustion engine, a new entrant has entered the field...and it may be the winner. Advanced Engine Technologies is offering a revolutionary new engine design - the OX-2.
The eight-cylinder OX-2 prototype is still a four-stoke piston engine, but looks like nothing you’ve ever seen. With only 3 moving parts it is 12 inches in diameter, 10 inches wide, weighs 140 lbs and has a displacement of 66.25 cubic inches. Yet it is capable of producing the same power and torque as a typical 350 cubic inch V-8 - with greater efficiency. The engine uses porting rather than valves, has no camshaft, no distributor, no oil pump and no water pump. Only 1 cup of oil is needed for lubrication and the pistons never come in contact with the cylinder bores. The engine has low production costs according to the company.
Advanced Engine Technologies has two new partners in joint venture agreements to further the development of the engine, automotive legend Carroll Shelby of Shelby Cobra and Shelby Mustang fame, and Unique Mobility, a leader in electric vehicle drive systems.
Shelby, a man who knows cars, said, “ If the performance figures are correct, the OX-2 engine is the most significant advancement in combustion engine technology that I have seen in my lifetime, and it has the potential to revolutionize the world’s engine industry.”
Unique Mobility will work with Advanced Engine to use the OX-2 for hybrid vehicle designs for even greater efficiency. The OX-2 technology can be used in place of any conventional engine, from lawn and garden equipment, to automotive, trucking, marine and aviation applications, to power generation. The U.S. Army has agreed to an R&D effort to use the OX-2 in tanks.

Editor’s note: The OX-2 engine may be a late entrant in the race, but it shouldn’t be ignored. If scientists are correct, and global warming/climate change are upon us, the conventional internal combustion engine needs a far more efficient replacement as soon as possible. Public acceptance is the key to success for the replacement engine. The OX-2, especially in electric hybrid form, could be fueled within the existing liquid fuels infrastructure, thus have the virtually unlimited range as today’s cars. OX-2 commercialization would give battery technology, fuel cells, flywheels, micro turbines, and pure electric vehicles more time for development.
